If you’ve recently encountered an issue with your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account, you might be tempted to search for support online. However, this could be dangerous if you’re not careful. There’s a known scam circulating where fraudulent support phone numbers appear in search results, offering “services” to fix database errors or perform costly repairs that don’t actually exist.
QuickBooks Online Scams: A Recent Example
One of our clients recently fell victim to this scam. They contacted what they thought was a legitimate QBO support number and were quoted an outrageous fee for a database repair that wasn’t necessary. This type of scam preys on the uncertainty of business owners, especially when you are dealing with unfamiliar technical issues.
QuickBooks Scams: How the Scam Works
- Google Search Trap: Scammers know that when QuickBooks users encounter problems, they often search online for support. Fraudulent phone numbers can easily appear in search results, especially if users don’t navigate through the official QuickBooks channels.
- Phony Repairs: Once contacted, scammers will claim that your QBO database is corrupted or malfunctioning and needs an urgent repair. They’ll quote you high fees for “database repair services” that don’t actually exist or aren’t necessary.
- Payment Pressure: To make matters worse, they often pressure clients into immediate payment, threatening further complications or data loss if the issue isn’t addressed.
How to Avoid Falling Victim to QuickBooks Scams
- Always Access Support from within QuickBooks Online or Intuit: The safest way to contact QuickBooks support is directly through your account. QuickBooks Online has a built-in support system—don’t rely on outside search engines.
- Verify Any Numbers You Find: If you’re unsure about a phone number or website, cross-reference it with Intuit’s official support page or contact them through verified channels.
- Be Cautious of Unsolicited Contact: If you receive unexpected phone calls or emails claiming to be from QuickBooks support, be wary. Official QuickBooks support won’t reach out unless you’ve initiated the contact.
- Be Cautious of High Fees: Legitimate database repairs and other fixes from Intuit or authorized support will never come with absurdly high costs. If something feels off, it likely is.
- Never Invite Unverified Users: Do not invite outside users to your QBO file unless you’re certain of their legitimacy. Scammers may request access to exploit your data.
It’s important to be aware of the risks associated with online support searches, especially for financial software like QuickBooks. By following these tips, you can avoid falling victim to these scams and ensure your financial data stays safe.
